Don't forget that in revernce for the late Dr. King, the holiday celebrated as "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day" was established as a national holiday (day off from work) in order for Americans to be of service to their communities and beyond.
Anyone local can come to St. Peter's from 8 until 11 in the morning Monday, where Marcy and has organized a pancake breakfast under the auspices of the Youth Group. The idea being that one should have a hearty breakfast prior to undertaking a day of service. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the family in Chatham that lost their home to fire recently. With an infant and two older children, the total loss has been even more devestating for the family to bear. Many local service-providers and retailers have generously donated thus far, with both financial capital and locally-grown/produced goods. More than a hundred are expected, and we'll be ready for even more, so don't be shy!
For my friends more far-flung, what a terrific opportunity to show gratitude and Grace in action. Rock on! Change is the popular contemporary mantra, and all change starts from within, so why not get out there and help someone else. God knows we all need to...nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to the feeling of selfless giving, and Monday is the opportunity to just get on board and do it...and all in the memory of a gifted and brilliant leader.
Have a blast out there with your friends and neighbors!

I missed your breakfast, though I would have come, if I was around and you had alarmed me to this event by good old time telephone, rotary dial included.
But I was away anyway, sat down and talked with an old (80years old) friend of mine in NYC and came back late Monday. So I wouldn't have made it anyway...
So, about this family in Chatham who lost their home by fire, I am a bit stupefied. Didn't they have insurance on their dwelling? I mean, if they had a $300,000 house the annual insurance rate would hover around $600... Did they pay it?
I don't understand the particular circumstances of this tragedy at this moment, maybe you can enlighten me.
As always, love Lukas.
Glad to see you bloggin' again. What a nifty thing for you all to do Monday...the eve of the BIG DAY! PBob & I watched all day and night ('til 1:30 AM, for me) Tuesday. GREAT DAY!
Zee, wonderful to see you surface again! As for the family, they were renting, and as a renter with a wife and three kids, I can tell you that to pay an additional 'insurance' fee above and beyond rent, fuel, electric, etc can be financially crippling to folks like us. So while they didn't lose their house, they did lose their home and all their worldly possessions. I think it hits the kids worst of all on that chord, but a tragedy nonetheless.
On a different note, are we going to get together for some dinner soon or what?!
And yay GmaB...welcome back! Marcy and I not only kept the kids home to sit glued to the television with us all day (tears, clapping, cheering, it was truly phenomenal), but the two of us stayed up to watch every bit of the glory we could until after 11 which, for us, well hey...
